Young Professional's Committee Update:

The Young Professionals Committee had a very busy spring and summer so far, organizing three events with nearly 60 participants combined! If you missed out on the Dayton WRF tour, the River Sweep, or the MillerCoors tour, we’ll be planning some events for later this year! If you’d like to receive emails about future YP events or would like to get involved with the committe, email YP Committee Chair Lindsey Hassenauer at lhassenauer@hazenandsawyer. com. Our events are open to all SWOWEA members! Thanks to everyone who attended the tour of the Dayton WRF and social hour on May 24, 2018. The 19 attendees had a nice day to walk the plant and got to see its unique treatment processes including the Trickling Filters, Digester Gas Cogenerators, Odor Control Biofilters, and multiple styles of Clarifiers. I’d also really like to mention some of the shenanigans that happened at Flanagan’s, but you’ll just have to make it out to the next YP event to see all the fun that we have. Thank you to Phil Bennington, Nick Dailey, and Jerry Wright with the City of Dayton for leading the tour and to Arcadis for sponsoring the networking event!

Approximately 33 SWOWEA and SWOAWWA members attended a tour of the MillerCoors Trenton Brewery on July 19, organized jointly by the SWOWEA YP and the SWOAWWA YP committees. The Trenton Brewery was built around 30 years ago, but did not begin production until the 1990s when demand started to soar for products such as MGD. The Brewery is one of MillerCoors largest, and regularly wins awards for its performance and efficiency. It can produce around 11 million barrels of beer a year, using production lines that can bottle a dizzying 2,000 bottles per minute, and laser guided automated vehicles in its distribution center. The Brewery draws water itself from the Great Miami Valley Aquifer and operates its own wastewater treatment facility and outfall to the Great Miami River. The tour was followed by a happy hour at the nearby Rivertown Brewery, sponsored by Hazen and Sawyer. Thank you to MillerCoors, especially Denise Quinn and Maria Cruset for hosting and leading the tours!

The SWOWEA YP group volunteered for the ORSANCO River Sweep which was held on June 16, 2018. The volunteers from Left to right: Lindsey Hassenauer, Jorge Elias, Julia Vantress, Dawn Smith, Pooja Chari and Matt Kallerud helped at Schmidt Boat Launch Ramp on east side of Cincinnati. The Ohio River Sweep is an event organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), an interstate water pollution agency for the Ohio River Valley. Since 1989, this award-winning cleanup for the Ohio River and its tributaries brings thousands of volunteers to the riverbanks to remove tons of trash and debris. River Sweep encompasses the entire length of the river, from its origin in Pittsburgh, PA to its end in Cairo, IL, including nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline and many tributaries.

Watch for emails from SWOWEA YP/Watershed Committee Chair Lindsey Hassenauer about volunteer opportunities with local watershed organizations, tours of wastewater-related facilities, river cleanups, lunch and learns, and more! Don’t forget – many of our events offer contact hours and are followed by networking hours to help you get to know your fellow wastewater industry professionals! If your company is interested in sponsoring an event, or if you would like to be added to our email list to learn about upcoming events, please contact Lindsey at
